Captain Jason Butler is a candidate for Sheriff of Scotland County and a veteran law-enforcement officer with 28 years of service protecting the citizens of Laurinburg and Scotland County. Over the course of his career as both a police officer and sheriff’s deputy, Jason has built a record of service rooted in integrity, accountability, and a deep commitment to the people of this community. He is running for Sheriff to provide steady leadership, uphold the law fairly, and ensure Scotland County remains a safe place to live, work, and raise a family.
For Jason, law enforcement has never been just a profession—it has always been a calling. He firmly believes the badge represents far more than authority; it represents responsibility, sacrifice, and service. Throughout nearly three decades in uniform, he has remained steadfast in the Oath of Office he swore to uphold the laws of the State of North Carolina and of the United States. That oath has guided his career and continues to shape his vision for the Sheriff’s Office.
Throughout his service, Jason has held himself—and those under his supervision—to the highest standards of professionalism and integrity. He believes public trust is one of the most valuable assets any law-enforcement agency can have, and he knows that trust must be earned through consistency, transparency, and principled leadership. He is proud to serve alongside the men and women of the Scotland County Sheriff’s Office, who share that same commitment to duty and public service.
Jason believes one of the most important responsibilities of the Sheriff is to protect the people who call Scotland County home. The safety of families, neighborhoods, and schools remains one of his highest priorities. He understands that public safety begins with strong law enforcement, but it also depends on trust between officers and the community, good judgment in leadership, and a clear commitment to doing what is right even when it is difficult.
As Sheriff, Jason is committed to building on the foundation already established while bringing steady, experienced leadership to the office. He believes there is significant work still to be done and that the Sheriff’s Office must continue improving, adapting, and working in partnership with other parts of local government to meet the county’s needs.
One of the serious issues he is committed to addressing is jail overcrowding. Jason has made clear that he will work with county commissioners and the District Attorney’s office to confront that challenge in a practical and collaborative way. He understands that overcrowding affects not only detention operations, but also public safety, county resources, and the overall administration of justice. Jason believes real progress will require strong leadership, coordination, and a willingness to work across agencies to find responsible solutions.
Jason is also committed to the responsible stewardship of public resources. He believes the Sheriff’s Office must be run with discipline, accountability, and respect for taxpayers.
